DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is like a daily bread to a lot of young people, and lately it seems middle aged and older people have joined in on the fun as well as businesses. When creating a social media account there are certain terms and conditions that need to be read then agreed upon for security reasons and it would seem that a lot of people choose to ignore this very important step. And because of that reason, social media is now being used as a platform for psychopaths and criminals to do their dirty work.

Late last year there was a male in the North West of South Africa who was murdered by a young woman and her boyfriend after agreeing to meet the girl at a cemetery. The boy who was killed and the girl had been friends on 2go (social site) for a while prior the incident. The story was on the news and in most newspapers in South Africa and 3rd degree (news documentary) did the follow up story early in the year. There was another famous story about a man who was raping women he had found on facebook and the famous mxit kidnap stories that most people would recall.
At first I didn’t really pay attention to all this, it hit me one weekend as I was sitting with my friend at home and got 3 calls from 3 different people who claim to have got my number on facebook, I realized how I wasn’t protecting my private and important information and immediately logged on facebook and removed all that important information. If people can see all that information about you on facebook, they will know where you live, work, etc and that will make it easy for them to plan your murder or kidnapping so make sure that all your important information is secure.

  1. This is so true, we often place ourselves in very vulnerable positions and put our lives at risk, not only can ppl plan our murders .Companies that we apply for can easily check your profiles and see all the things you tweet or facebook about and one can be compromised.

  3. I agree with you that there are incidents like this happening but people have to be cautious when it comes into writing everything on their profiles. We cannot ignore the fact that our profile information will help us when applying for jobs.

    1. That is the sad part about it @Akhona, we have to hide our profiles for pontential employers because of sick people who don't have anything better to do with their lives.

  5. People really need to be careful when using social media. Yes it is a playground, but just like the school playgrounds in reality it is not all fun and games as there are "bullies" who are only out there to hurt you.

    1. All you need to do is leave your e-mail adress for companies to find you, everything else must be confidential.

  7. The reason why we dn't read terms and condtions it's becuase of that they are written in small fonts so according to me socila media companies also do not care about our safety all they want is just to make money and ignore about our cinfudential information

    1. @Lucky, depending on the type of cell phone you're using you can increase or decrease the font size. So I will have to disagree with you on that one. Most people are ignorant, they don't see the point of reading terms and conditions.

    1. We can be smart about it and let people know what they need to know and keep what they don't need to know private. We must also make those who don't know aware of the dangers of social media and why it is important to secure personal information.

  11. The sad part about this whole situation is the fact that even with all these things taking place; social media is still going to continue growing around the world

  12. DISAGREE!!

Social media is all about getting connected with those aroun you, adress and all. Its not like one can choose NOT to accept someone...oh wait, they CAN DO THAT.
At the end of the day social media is the wave of the future and if members of society cannot protect themselves enough and logically, these things will happen.
    Agg shame!!
